Learnings from the 2020 Sony Open

There was only one player who finished in the Top 37 of the 2020 field who lost strokes on Approach. Any guesses? If you answered “Defending champion Cameron Smith”, you are correct! Smith gained a ridiculous 8.2 Total Strokes Putting at last year’s event, the most of his career. Kevin Kisner’s T4 finish, despite losing 0.9 Strokes Putting, was another anomaly of note for the historically deft putter. I don’t need to tell you Webb Simpson finished Top 3, that’s implied by way of him being in the field.

The winning score of -11 was the worst total to win in the last 10 years, a credit to severe winds in the first two rounds. This extreme weather provides a great excuse to go back to the 2020 MCs (Henley, Kuchar, Munoz) who get a bit of a price discount this year from those freak conditions. Assuming normal playing conditions, we should expect scores in the high-teens/low-twenties this week.
